Pow! Thwak! Thuds! and Booms! Comic Book Lettering

Soooo focus is a problem for me. I tend to wander all over the artistic landscape, from bonsai trees to illustrations on denim, to cartooning, to leather burning, and now, lately (slowly) comic book lettering. I’ve just completed my second book, by the amazing writer and publisher Andrew Lorenz, @AndrewLorenz17, of S17.ca fame. He let me take on the lettering role for his first book and asked me to come on for the second book of Canadian Corps. Working with an all-Canadian crew of Donovan Yaciuk (colourist) and the flatlander Justin Shauf (artist) we have created something special, an independent comic book that stands up in quality to the highest books out there.

I’ve just completed my second book, by the amazing writer and publisher Andrew Lorenz, @AndrewLorenz17, of S17.ca fame. He let me take on the lettering mantle for his first book and asked me to come on for the second book of Canadian Corps. Working with an all-Canadian crew of Donovan Yaciuk (colourist) and the flatlander Justin Shauf (artist) we have created something special, an independent comic book that stands up in quality to the highest books out there. With the talent of my co-creators, it’s easy to see why that happened but it was also a result of the respect and fun we have for each other. It’s a great team and I’ve learned a lot.

The book will soon be available at s17.ca for purchase and on a kickstarter later in the year. I’ll provide links to them as they progress. For now, you’ll have to be teased with some of these panels from the books. Enjoy!

Lettering, the often non-credited part of a comic book, has been described as the easiest way to make a book look like a five-year-old worked on it. Gulp. Basically, it’s ignored when done well, and it destroys a book when done poorly. Not the most rewarding of options artistically, I’ll state that, but it does use a lot of my skills and loves. I get to do page layout, honed from years in marketing flyer production, and typography skills from magazine and ad development – but with superheroes fighting aliens! And my print production talents come in handy when trouble shooting the book as it goes to the printer. And it’s about super-heroes fighting aliens. Love it!!! (to heck with proper writing style, it’s comic books, I get to use lots of exclamation points).
